Coding theory is a major component of Applied Algebra. It has many applications in the mathematics of communications and has many links with other scientific disciplines, such as electrical engineering and computer science. Coding theory arises in almost every imaginable digital communications and storage system. In UCD, it is taught at the undergraduate level in the module MATH30180 An Introduction to Coding Theory.
Assessment for Learning Resources for First Year Undergraduate Mathematics Modules
About this initiative
This project involved the development of formative assessment tools for use in large-group classes, including UniDoodle, an app-based student response system for use first year undergraduate mathematics modules to support student engagement and to provide immediate, ongoing and high-quality feedback to students. The project also involved the provision of new online resources and the development of interactive tasks which could be used by students outside of class time to monitor their own progress and support this progress with the identification of relevant existing e-learning material. The UniDoodle app, developed through the project, currently has over 150 users across countries including Australia, Canada, the USA, South Africa and a number of European countries. The resources developed through this project are now embedded in relevant modules across partner institutions and a framework for planning the development of, and classifying, technology-enhanced resources in mathematics education (TeRMEd) is also being devised as a result of this project.
