An Introduction to MAGMA for Coding Theory

Digital LearningTeaching and Learning Practice

Description

Final report on a 12-hour Magma workshop supporting UCD’s Introduction to Coding Theory module. Eimear Byrne and Giuseppe Cotardo describe the workshop design, programming exercises, ten group-project briefs and student feedback. Includes example code and assessment tasks.

Benefit of this resource and how to make the best use of it

This report is a practical reference for lecturers and tutors who want to connect abstract coding theory with computational experimentation. It documents a three-day workshop for UCD’s MATH30180 module and includes teaching materials alongside the project evaluation.

  • Use the workshop schedule to plan a sequence from basic Magma programming to finite fields, vector and matrix spaces, and error-correcting codes.
  • Draw on five short programming exercises and their example implementations when designing practical activities.
  • Adapt the ten group-project briefs, which cover code properties, code constructions and decoding algorithms at different levels of difficulty.
  • Review the combination of daily tasks, independent group projects and presentations when planning assessment.
  • Consider the student feedback and the authors’ reflections on workshop duration and project time when adapting the approach.

The workshop ran on 9–11 March 2020. Subsequent group work and presentations moved online during the COVID-19 restrictions. The report therefore also provides context for supporting computational mathematics projects remotely.

Written by Eimear Byrne and Giuseppe Cotardo, School of Mathematics and Statistics, University College Dublin. Dated 14 June 2021, it is the final report of a Learning Enhancement Project for 2019–2020.
