The project investigated the opportunities and risks presented by artificial intelligence in engineering doctoral education, with particular attention to structured tutoring and research skills development. Through targeted case studies, it examined how AI tools could support or potentially undermine technical computing, scripting, and other elements of postgraduate research. The research evaluated the use of AI for writing and proofreading theses and papers, creating data visualisations and scientific diagrams, simulating peer review, and assisting with technical workflows. By assessing both the capabilities and limitations of these tools, the project provided guidance on their appropriate, ethical, and transparent use in engineering research education.
