Coding theory is a major component of Applied Algebra. It has many applications in the mathematics of communications and has many links with other scientific disciplines, such as electrical engineering and computer science. Coding theory arises in almost every imaginable digital communications and storage system. In UCD, it is taught at the undergraduate level in the module MATH30180 An Introduction to Coding Theory.

REX – Research Expertise Exchange
About this initiative
The ‘REX’ project brought together three higher education institutions involved in initial teacher education to build a digital bridge between academic and professional practice through the creation of a web-based portal, the Research Expertise Exchange (REX), to nurture digital skills for research and meet a real-world demand for expertise. The REX project offered training for teaching staff in all institutions to enhance their digital skills and encourage them to engage in technology-enhanced learning using the REX platform. Members who have joined the platform include those from higher education institutions, primary and secondary schools, as well as professional bodies. This project crossed both the higher-education-second level divide and the teaching-research divide. It impacted on student teachers’ conceptions of what a teaching career involved and also transformed the identities of practicing teachers, allowing them to bring real-life research into their teaching and participate in action research in their classrooms. REX has now been included within the Teaching Council’s newly-established Research Support Framework.

UCD Community Engaged Learning and Teaching (CELT) Community of Practice
Community Engaged Learning and Teaching is considered to be transformative for students and practitioners, underpinned by civic participation in community and society. One of the strategic themes of the UCD Rising to the Future Strategy is “Building a Healthy World” a core objective of which is to “continue to build our engagement locally, nationally and internationally”. Community Engaged Learning (CEL) and Teaching affords the University an opportunity to build and strengthen strong partnerships with social and community organisations in a meaningful and transformative way. It provides faculty, students and community organisations opportunities to engage in a symbiotic manner, learning from each other whilst bridging the gap between academic learning and the lived reality(ies) of society.
Improving Access to Practical Elements of Environmental Engineering
In an applied subject – such as engineering – practical, hands-on learning opportunities are invaluable. Student and external examiner feedback has emphasised the value that students place on laboratory and practical classes, and the desire to incorporate more of these activities into the modules offered. This project focuses on two modules which are delivered simultaneously to two cohorts of students; in-person and online.
