Coding theory is a major component of Applied Algebra. It has many applications in the mathematics of communications and has many links with other scientific disciplines, such as electrical engineering and computer science. Coding theory arises in almost every imaginable digital communications and storage system. In UCD, it is taught at the undergraduate level in the module MATH30180 An Introduction to Coding Theory.
Preparing Students for an AI-Driven World: Responsible AI, Ethics, and Assessment Innovation in Higher Education
About this initiative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming how students learn, how educators teach, and how assessment is designed. This SATLE-funded project aims to develop and pilot an interdisciplinary framework, supported by a practical toolkit, that enables the ethical, responsible, and pedagogically effective integration of AI into teaching, learning, and assessment in higher education.
Positioned within the SATLE theme of Digital Transformation, the project brings together expertise from business and computer science to address the growing need for AI literacy, ethical awareness, responsible innovation, and assessment redesign in an increasingly AI-enabled world. The project will develop a practical toolkit to support both students and academic staff in navigating the opportunities and challenges of AI in higher education. The toolkit will be designed for implementation across diverse educational contexts, including Ireland and an international partner campus in Singapore.
The project will deliver four key outputs:
- A Responsible AI Toolkit guiding the ethical, critical, and effective use of AI technologies;
- A suite of interdisciplinary case studies drawn from business and societal contexts that explore real-world AI opportunities, risks, governance challenges, and ethical dilemmas;
- Authentic AI-ready assessment designs that promote critical thinking, transparency, academic integrity, and responsible engagement with AI; and
- Pilot learning activities and workshops embedded within participating modules.
The project aims to enhance AI literacy by enabling students and educators to evaluate AI technologies critically, understand their capabilities and limitations, and apply them responsibly. Additionally, the project will foster effective human–AI collaboration while supporting the development of higher-order skills, including critical thinking, problem-solving, reflection, creativity, and independent judgment. Ultimately, the project seeks to help prepare students, educators, and institutions for an AI-driven future in which the ability to work effectively, critically, and ethically with AI is increasingly essential.
