About this initiative

The project explored the impact of AI text-generation tools on higher education, using biology and environmental science modules as a foundation. It aimed to support educators and students in adopting AI responsibly while strengthening teaching and assessment focused on critical thinking, problem-solving, and scientific integrity. The project comprised three stages. The review stage examined developments in AI language models, international best practice, and the potential vulnerability of existing STEM assessments. The response stage investigated staff and student perceptions of AI, academic integrity, teaching, and learning through surveys and workshops. The roadmap stage translated the findings into practical recommendations and educational resources. Key outputs included a staff webinar, a university-wide research report, an educational toolkit, guidance for module coordinators, recommendations for academic integrity policy, and teaching materials promoting the ethical use of AI in science education.
