Supporting AI in Learning for Sustainability (SAILS): A scalable teaching model for sustainability curricula at UCD

SATLE
Digital Learning, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

About this initiative

The aim of SAILS is to establish a scalable and transferable model for integrating AI into sustainability-focused education at UCD. The project will pilot this model within the School of Architecture, Planning & Environmental Policy and, where feasible, in collaboration with related social science programmes. These contexts will act as testbeds for a transferable approach that can be adapted across disciplines.

The project will deliver targeted outputs that enhance student learning, skills development, and preparedness for a rapidly evolving, AI-enabled policy environment. Students will develop competencies in using AI tools for sustainability-related analysis, including policy evaluation, evidence synthesis, and problem-solving, alongside critical understanding of AI limitations, biases, and ethical implications.
Students will engage in structured, AI-integrated learning activities and assessments, applying AI tools to real-world sustainability challenges. This will strengthen analytical skills, digital literacy, and confidence in using emerging technologies. Reflective components will support critical evaluation of when and how AI should be used.

Key deliverables for students include:

  • 2–3 AI-integrated workshops embedded within existing modules
  • Structured in-class exercises using AI for policy tasks
  • 1 redesigned assessment incorporating AI-supported policy analysis
  • A short student AI use guide (responsible use, prompts, limitations)
