Coding theory is a major component of Applied Algebra. It has many applications in the mathematics of communications and has many links with other scientific disciplines, such as electrical engineering and computer science. Coding theory arises in almost every imaginable digital communications and storage system. In UCD, it is taught at the undergraduate level in the module MATH30180 An Introduction to Coding Theory.
Reading Together: a book club to discuss issues in teaching, learning, research and assessment
About this initiative
This proposal aims to enhance the professional development of all individuals engaged in teaching at SETU. The term ‘teaching’ will be interpreted inclusively as per the National Forum, including not only lecturers but also postgraduates, librarians, learning technologists, technicians and all involved with teaching in some capacity. Each meeting of the Reading Together book club will be focused on a chapter of a relevant book (or selected chapters). The facilitation will be led by members of the project group (Damien Raftery, Deanna Santoro, Breda Connell, Claire Kennedy and Kim Harte) accompanied by an invited co-facilitator(s) who may include lecturers, librarians or others who teach, postgraduates, SU officers and other learners. The intention is to actively include a student perspective, primarily by engaging postgraduate students in the discussion. In addition, we will invite, as appropriate, representatives of undergraduate students to share their perspectives. This book club initiative has the potential to provide a forum where staff and students from all campuses could read and learn together. Equally, the nature of the book club is such that it could easily be offered onsite or online, thereby accommodating a diverse range of participants. The Reading Together book club aligns with the overall theme of the call by fostering collaboration and advancing the ongoing development of critical reading and thinking skills amongst the university’s staff and students. Some of the selected books will be chosen to reflect the specific themes of sustainable development, digital transformation and academic integrity. Additionally, there are opportunities to run a session during Academic Integrity Week and collaborate on sessions related to equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI).
