Postgraduate Students as Partners: Developing a toolkit for supervision

The purpose of this project was to develop an evidence base to inform a toolkit to support research supervisors and supervisees at UCC. To meet this purpose, the project examined the role of teaching and learning in supporting supervisors and supervisees. The project was motivated by international research into the experience of supervisors and supervisees. The potential role of teaching and learning to support the supervisor/supervisee relationship was identified as a gap in the research. The significance of this research gap was underscored by institutional prioritisation of standardising research supervision at UCC. Various UCC stakeholders engaged in supporting supervision expressed the wish for the Centre for the Integration for Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) to contribute to teaching and learning activities in postgraduate supervision and the professionalisation of the supervisor/supervisee relationship (e.g., Dean of Graduate Studies, members of the Graduate Studies Committee, Graduate Studies Office, Research and Innovation, etc). The project will inform CIRTL’s offerings in the context of teaching and learning, including a 5-credit elective on supervision built into the Postgraduate Certificate and the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (TL6003, TL6004, PG6003).
