Coding theory is a major component of Applied Algebra. It has many applications in the mathematics of communications and has many links with other scientific disciplines, such as electrical engineering and computer science. Coding theory arises in almost every imaginable digital communications and storage system. In UCD, it is taught at the undergraduate level in the module MATH30180 An Introduction to Coding Theory.
Not Just Bones: Enhancing Anatomy Learning in UCD Diagnostic Imaging through 3D Printing and Augmented Reality
About this initiative
This project aims to enhance anatomy and radiography education within the UCD Medicine & Diagnostic Imaging programme through the development of an integrated suite of 3D-printed anatomical models supported by augmented reality (AR).It addresses key challenges in anatomy education, including limited access to specimens, difficulty in developing 3D spatial understanding, and a disconnect between anatomical learning and clinical imaging practice.
Aim: To develop and embed an innovative, technology-enhanced learning toolkit that improves students’ anatomical understanding, radiographic competence, and engagement.
Deliverables:
- A suite of 3D printed anatomical bone models aligned to the anatomy curriculum
- An AR platform with interactive anatomy visualisation, labelling, and radiographic positioning guidance
- Integrated teaching resources for Diagnostic Imaging modules
- Evaluation report and dissemination outputs
Student Outcomes:
Students within the UCD School of Medicine will demonstrate measurable improvements in spatial understanding of anatomy and the ability to relate anatomical structures to radiographic images. The AR-enhanced approach will support deeper conceptual learning by enabling students to visualise anatomy dynamically and in clinical context. Students will develop increased confidence in radiographic positioning and image interpretation, directly supporting clinical placement readiness.
The project will enhance engagement and independent learning, allowing students to interact with materials beyond scheduled teaching sessions. Students involved as partners will develop transferable skills in co-design, digital innovation, and educational evaluation.
