Coding theory is a major component of Applied Algebra. It has many applications in the mathematics of communications and has many links with other scientific disciplines, such as electrical engineering and computer science. Coding theory arises in almost every imaginable digital communications and storage system. In UCD, it is taught at the undergraduate level in the module MATH30180 An Introduction to Coding Theory.
Initiative
Module-Grounded AI Tutors and Re-takeable Mastery Quizzes for Self-Regulated Learning
About this initiative
The project produces three integrated deliverables corresponding to the three workstreams: a suite of module- grounded AI tutors, a mastery quiz engine, and a Mandarin tutor extension. The student-facing outcomes are: always-available, syllabus-grounded tutoring; assessment that rewards genuine mastery rather than performance on a single day; and, for Mandarin learners, the kind of patient, repeatable feedback on tone and character writing that has historically required one-to-one teaching.
- The first deliverable is a suite of module-embedded AI tutors deployed across four pilot modules: Quantitative Finance, MBA Strategy, Operations, and Mandarin for Business. Each tutor is trained on its host module’s approved materials and refreshed every term. The student-facing experience is a chat interface offering one-to- one tutoring grounded in the module syllabus rather than the open web. The faculty-facing experience is a dashboard surfacing topic-level patterns of student difficulty in near real time, letting the next lecture respond to where the cohort actually is.
- The second deliverable is a mastery quiz engine with unlimited retakes, freshly generated items per attempt, and immediate AI-generated feedback after each attempt. Students receive their grade only at the end of term, computed as the mean across all attempts. The engine works for both quantitative and conceptual content, making it as suitable for asset pricing as for strategic frameworks.
- The third deliverable is a Mandarin tutor with pronunciation feedback and radical-based grouping of Chinese characters, addressing one of the most under-served pedagogical gaps in our language offering.
