Development of sustainable chemistry in undergraduate teaching laboratories

The project developed and expanded sustainable chemistry activities within undergraduate teaching laboratories. It benchmarked the environmental and sustainable chemistry programme against comparable undergraduate programmes, identifying gaps in subject coverage and learning outcomes. The project produced five bespoke laboratory sessions focused on practical aspects of green and sustainable chemistry and supported programme changes required for professional accreditation. It also improved the environmental sustainability of existing laboratory teaching by introducing greener experiments and practices and embedding sustainability concepts throughout practical modules. Participating students contributed to programme analysis, the identification of sustainable replacement experiments, and the preparation of laboratory manuals, developing practical skills relevant to future employment in the chemical industry.
