Coding theory is a major component of Applied Algebra. It has many applications in the mathematics of communications and has many links with other scientific disciplines, such as electrical engineering and computer science. Coding theory arises in almost every imaginable digital communications and storage system. In UCD, it is taught at the undergraduate level in the module MATH30180 An Introduction to Coding Theory.
Initiative
V-SUSTAIN-CHEM (Virtual Systems for Undergraduate Science: Transnational Alignment and Inclusive Networks in Chemistry)
About this initiative
This project aims to co-create, pilot, and transnationally validate immersive IVR chemistry modules that improve student understanding and generate a replicable SaP model, positioning UCD as a founding node of an international SaP-IVR community of practice.
Key Deliverables:
- The V-SUSTAIN Module Suite
Up to three immersive IVR modules (e.g. Molecular Dynamics & Symmetry; Sustainable Lab Safety; Green Chemistry), co-created by UCD students; platform-agnostic.
- Transnational Validation Report
A comparative analysis report detailing learning gain differences and UX feedback from UCD, and NTNU partner cohorts.
- The Global VR-Chemistry Toolkit
An open-access guide for aligning IVR pedagogy with UNESCO SDG competencies, CC BY licensed, deposited at the National Resource Hub (with the National Forum, HEA, and Government of Ireland logos affixed per SATLE Term 12).
- Student-Led Dissemination
A co-presentation/poster delivered by UCD UG/PG partners at e.g. iLRN 2027, an ACS National Meeting, ICCE, MICER, or the UCD T&L Forum.
