Coding theory is a major component of Applied Algebra. It has many applications in the mathematics of communications and has many links with other scientific disciplines, such as electrical engineering and computer science. Coding theory arises in almost every imaginable digital communications and storage system. In UCD, it is taught at the undergraduate level in the module MATH30180 An Introduction to Coding Theory.
Integrating AI into Equine Clinical Education: Developing Critical and Professional Graduate Capabilities
About this initiative
This project aims to design and embed learning experiences that support students to critically and responsibly engaging with AI tools in clinical practice, with particular emphasis on clinical decision-making and client communication for lameness examinations.
This project will produce key deliverables that will support both the effective integration of AI into an authentic workplace learning context and enhanced AI literacy and graduate capabilities required by veterinary accreditation standards.
Key Project Deliverables:
- Develop and implement structured AI-supported equine lameness examination workplace learning activities (using Sleip AI) within the final year veterinary medicine equine clinical rotation, enabling students to apply and critically evaluate AI outputs in authentic clinical cases.
- Produce a case report and a practical educator guidance resource that describe the implementation process, challenges, and transferable approaches for supporting student AI literacy in workplace learning contexts.
- Supervise a student summer research project that nationally surveys AI use by Irish horse owners and explores their expectations of case management and ways of communicating with veterinarians.
Collectively, these deliverables aim to support students’ development of graduate capabilities that include AI literacy. This aims to provide students with a greater awareness of how AI can impact professional practice, its strengths and weaknesses, clinical reasoning, client expectations, and professional communication skills required for future veterinary practice.
