Co-Creating Virtual Labs: Digital Innovation in Laboratory Learning for Enhanced Graduate Development

SATLE
Digital Learning, Teaching and Learning Practice

About this initiative

This project aims to develop a scalable and transferable blueprint for the sustainable integration of multimedia pre-laboratory digital training resources into teaching and learning practice. The project supports both disciplinary learning and transferable skills, including digital literacy, critical evaluation, and communication.

Key Deliverables

  • A scalable and transferable blueprint for multimedia pre-laboratory training, including documented workflows for co-creation, design, production, evaluation, and deployment (WP1–WP5)
  • A suite of exemplar multimedia training packages (video tutorials, SOPs, reference materials) demonstrating the implementation of the blueprint (WP2)
  • Structured co-creation and evaluation guidelines, including assessment rubric for evaluation of educational videos (WP2–WP3)
  • Integration of resources into Brightspace and creation of an OER virtual laboratory repository (WP3)
  • Students advisory panel report (WP3)
  • Dissemination outputs and guidelines to support project sustainability and adoption within UCD and beyond (WP4)

Expected Student Outcomes

PhD and taught master’s students (co-creators):

  • Development of advanced competencies in digital content creation, science communication, and pedagogically informed knowledge transfer, including efficient, critical and ethical use of AI tools for reference material collection, e-learning design support, SOP drafting, and video production.
  • Experience in co-creation, iterative design, and responding to user feedback
  • Creation of a professional digital portfolio showcasing transferable skills

MSc students (BSEN40460):

  • Enhanced critical evaluation skills through structured assessment of multimedia learning resources
  • Improved ability to assess the quality, reliability, and pedagogical value of digital content

All laboratory users (undergraduate, MSc, PhD):

  •  Improved preparedness for laboratory sessions through structured pre-lab resources
  • Increased accessibility, consistency, and inclusivity of laboratory training
  • Improved access and effectiveness of laboratory and expert trainers’ time, and improved confidence in technical procedures.
