Teaching and learning initiative

Outcomes and Indicators of Success in First Year Calculus

SATLE
Digital Learning, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

About this initiative

A fundamental revision to the teaching, learning and assessment of two first year Calculus modules was implemented as part of DCU Futures. This included the incorporation of: digital transformation through a blended learning approach, a mastery learning approach, UDL and an increased focus on critical thinking skills. Our SATLE project aimed to investigate the effectiveness of these revisions. Of particular interest were the extent to which the blended learning and the mastery learning approaches had succeeded; both of which were deemed important for the strategic development of teaching and learning in the School of Mathematical Sciences. The project also aimed to explore indicators of success on the module, such as the influence of demographic details or maths anxiety on engagement and attainment levels.
