This project integrates mobile devices into forestry field trips to enhance student engagement and foster inquiry-based learning (IBL), representing an innovative approach to education. By merging technology with experiential learning, the project enables students to actively participate in sustainable development education, cultivating curiosity, critical thinking, and digital skills. IBL encourages students to develop knowledge through exploration and investigation, making forestry field trips an ideal setting to study ecological systems and environmental challenges. Mobile devices enhance these experiences by enabling real-time observation, collaboration, and access to resources. The project focuses on the Principles of Silviculture module in the BSc in Forestry program at SETU. Fieldwork presents two main challenges: ensuring immediate communication and instructional support in large, remote forest areas and efficiently collecting and managing complex field data, such as recording bird calls for species identification. Mobile devices address these challenges by improving connectivity, enabling real-time feedback, and streamlining data collection and management. Aligned with Ireland’s Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) to 2030 National Strategy, the project promotes sustainability literacy by fostering understanding of forestry ecosystems and sustainable practices. It employs innovative, technology-enhanced learning methods and integrates STEM, environmental science, and digital literacy to address real-world sustainability issues. Additionally, it promotes active citizenship by engaging students in critical thinking and problem-solving while contributing to SDGs like 4 (education for sustainable development), 13 (climate action), and 15 (life on land). Using a lecturer-operated tablet integrated with students’ devices, the project enables real-time communication, assessment, and GPS tracking for safety. Students will collaborate and communicate during fieldwork, ensuring the achievement of module learning outcomes while emphasizing sustainability and innovative educational practices. This approach advances experiential learning and aligns with ESD 2030 priorities.
