Coding theory is a major component of Applied Algebra. It has many applications in the mathematics of communications and has many links with other scientific disciplines, such as electrical engineering and computer science. Coding theory arises in almost every imaginable digital communications and storage system. In UCD, it is taught at the undergraduate level in the module MATH30180 An Introduction to Coding Theory.
About this initiative
The project developed a set of evolving web resources to help educators understand and navigate the use or non-use of generative artificial intelligence in teaching, learning, and assessment. The resources outlined the capabilities and educational potential of generative AI while addressing concerns relating to academic integrity, plagiarism, over-reliance on technology, critical thinking, writing skills, and foundational knowledge. The web pages provided guidance on generative AI tools, the institutional landscape, and approaches to assessment. They also served as a central hub for professional development activities, including practical workshops, expert webinars, panel discussions, and practice-sharing events for students, faculty, and staff. The project further supported interdisciplinary research, the practical exploration of AI tools, and student–staff dialogue. Communities of practice and special-interest groups enabled participants to exchange experiences, reflect on emerging challenges, and develop responsible, intentional approaches to using generative AI in education.
