Coding theory is a major component of Applied Algebra. It has many applications in the mathematics of communications and has many links with other scientific disciplines, such as electrical engineering and computer science. Coding theory arises in almost every imaginable digital communications and storage system. In UCD, it is taught at the undergraduate level in the module MATH30180 An Introduction to Coding Theory.
Initiative
Leveraging digital tools for creating and grading assignments and laboratory experiment reports
About this initiative
The purpose of the project was primarily to explore alternative assessment of student performance in practical laboratory sessions, and the main motivation was to reduce costs due to the University’s financial situation. Traditionally practical sessions in chemisry are assessed by marking of written reports, where the marking is carried out by laboratory demonstrators. This remains the preferred method, but the University no longer finds that the cost of paying demonstrators to correct reports is sustainable. The project explored digital tools for automatic assessment of student performance in practical sessions through online submission and marking of “reports”.
