Student success at college is not just achieving high grades The National Forum for Teaching and Learning defines student success as the process by which students fulfil their potential and flourish at college and in society. This is a broader activity than simply achieving high grades. Psychosocial competencies are core to the definition of student success: these are the ‘soft skills’ or ‘non-cognitive skills’ that enable students to cope well with learning challenges, engage deeply in learning, and develop their identities as learners and as active citizens. Transitions are a key issue within this priority area, with transitions such as the move from school to college presenting both challenges and opportunities for students.
Global Citizenship – A Transnational Classroom Approach
About this initiative
The overarching aim of this project Global Citizenship: A Transnational Classroom Approach, is to develop a blueprint module for all UCD students (irrespective of their physical location) to cultivate a sense of belonging, and support them in becoming reflective practitioners with strong transversal skills, by engaging in experiential, transdisciplinary and intercultural, peer learning.
All Students
The key deliverable is a suite of RLRs, which are culturally responsive and transdisciplinary in nature that will be embedded in a new module, Global Citizenship – A Transnational Classroom Approach, which draws on our UCD Global footprint. This will be an introductory level elective module available to all UCD students, based in Dublin or overseas. Participation in the module presents as an internationalization at home opportunity for all UCD students who register to the module. Through engagement with this module they can develop their intercultural and global competencies in a facilitated peer learning environment, while exploring how they can become more active citizens in engaging with the sustainable agenda. Through engagement with this module, all enrolled students will be been exposed to a transdisciplinary faculty team and gain insights to UCD’s global engagement activities and UCD advances in sustainability research. More broadly the developed RLRs will can be embedded into existing modules across UCD to enhance experiential peer learning and promote diversity and inclusion.
Overseas Students
Overseas UCD students and students enrolled on pre-masters pathway programmes, have an opportunity to feel a greater sense of belonging to UCD. This module presents them with an opportunity to share their cultural and disciplinary perspective, thus making them feel visible, heard and valued.
Dublin Students
UCD Dublin students have an opportunity to broaden their horizons and global perspective through a peer learning environment.
