Advancing Innovative Teaching Practices within the SETU Faculty of Business: towards inclusive and sustainable principles and practices

This initiative responds to Theme 1 of the Call specifically, supporting the embedding of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and inclusive and sustainable principles and practices in higher education. In responding to the call for more inclusive learning environments across all levels, the proposed project will seek to garner the perspectives of first year business students across the SETU campuses within the Faculty of Business. The project will highlight student awareness and experiences of sustainable and innovative teaching practices, with particular emphasis on values, priorities and attendance. Building on the success of achieving the National DELTA Award for the SETU Faculty of Business, this project will seek to evaluate the first-year student experience of innovative teaching practices. The proposed work will build on previous projects, ref. TL20WIT11260 (2021- 2023), TL19WIT1504 (2019 to 2021) and NF042-NF045 (2022). This proposed work responds specifically to Priority 4 (ESD to 2030, the Second National Strategy on Education for Sustainable Development): Empowering and Mobilising Young People, recognising young people as key contributors to our sustainable future. It will seek to ensure that they are included in the design, delivery and monitoring of policies and programmes on ESD. It also responds to calls from researchers for a greater understanding of student perspectives and experiences of educational approaches that support sustainable development and UN SDGs (Kottara et al, 2024; Acosta Castellanos, P. M., & Queiruga-Dios, 2022; Mokski et al. 2023 and Ferguson et al., 2022) The 2024/2025 initiative, will conduct surveys and focus groups with first year students to identify and develop innovative T&L practices to support and stimulate ESD principles and inclusivity, and promote a positive student learning experience at this level. A previous project (TLWIT11260), focused on final year students and also used focus groups to collect rich, in-depth data on their T&L perspectives.
