Join Professor Joseph Feller for this interactive workshop, jointly hosted by the Higher Education Authority and University College Cork, exploring the AI Fluency Framework (AIFF) and its application to higher education teaching and learning.

The workshop will introduce the core concepts of the AI Fluency Framework and consider how it can support curriculum development, pedagogy, instructional design, independent inquiry, assessment and wider teaching and learning practice. Participants will engage in practical exercises and guided discussions, with opportunities to connect the framework to their own institutional and professional contexts.

Background

The AI Fluency Framework was developed in 2023-2024 by Joseph Feller (University College Cork) and Rick Dakan (Ringling College of Art and Design). The framework defines AI Fluency as our ability to interact with AI in ways that are effective, efficient, ethical and safe. It describes three common modes of human-AI interaction (automation, augmentation, and agentic) and four broad competency areas (Delegation, Description, Discernment, Diligence) that enable fluent interactions.

In 2025, with support from the Higher Education Authority, through the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning, Feller and Dakan collaborated with Anthropic PBC to build a portfolio of online courses based on the framework. These are available through OpenCourses.ie, with course materials and videos freely available under a Creative Commons licence.

Since release, the online courses have served over one million online learners (with an average completion rate of 40%). The framework and open educational resources have been adopted and adapted by institutions here in Ireland and abroad, including the London School of Economics and Political Science, University of Warwick, University of Texas at Austin, University of Rochester, University of Pittsburgh, and Mississippi State University. In addition, it has been adopted to support staff development, change management, and AI strategy in SMEs, multinational companies, non-profit organisations and public bodies.

Workshop Structure

Participants will:

  • Be provided with an overview of the core concepts of the AI Fluency Framework.
  • Complete practical exercises applying the AI Fluency Framework to human-AI Interaction (all participants should bring a laptop, eduroam Wi-Fi access is available in the venue).
  • Engage in guided discussion and experience sharing exploring the integration of the AI Fluency Framework with higher education learning and teaching activities.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Articulate the core concepts of the AI Fluency Framework.
  • Apply these concepts to their own human-AI interactions in personal and professional practice.
  • Integrate the AI Fluency Framework with higher education learning and teaching activities, and/or facilitate others to do so.

Workshop Facilitator

Joseph Feller is the Professor of Information Systems and Digital Transformation at University College Cork, where he previously (2017-2022) served as the Head of Department of Business Information Systems.  His current research explores Human-AI interaction; AI-enabled knowledge work, innovation and problem solving; and AI impacts on organisations and societies. He is co-creator (with Prof Rick Dakan, Ringling College of Art and Design) of the AI Fluency Framework (AIFF), a competency framework for making Human-AI interaction more effective, efficient, ethical, and safe. His research is published in Information Systems Research, Journal of the Association of Information Systems, Journal of Information Technology, Information Systems Journal, European Journal of Information Systems, Journal of Strategic Information Systems, among others, and has been funded by the European Commission, Research Ireland, the Irish Higher Education Authority, US funding bodies, and industry, public sector, and NGO partners.
