Coding theory is a major component of Applied Algebra. It has many applications in the mathematics of communications and has many links with other scientific disciplines, such as electrical engineering and computer science. Coding theory arises in almost every imaginable digital communications and storage system. In UCD, it is taught at the undergraduate level in the module MATH30180 An Introduction to Coding Theory.
Pixels of Progress – Smart Solutions for Communicating the School of Education
About this initiative
We aim to establish a digital Teaching & Learning (T&L) engagement initiative collaboratively developed by the Teaching, Learning, and Assessment Committee of the School of Education and Lifelong Learning (SoELL), including both staff and students. This local, small-scale initiative aligns with the SATLE call’s objectives, aiming to support teaching and learning enhancement and connect and empower members of SoELL in Teaching & Learning. It marks the inaugural major effort by the newly formed Teaching, Learning & Assessment Committee of the SoELL, signifying the committee’s strategic aim to embrace digital transformation in T&L by the staff and students. The central feature of this initiative is an innovative, interactive digital noticeboard or leaflet to be situated in the main corridor of the School of Education and Lifelong Learning in the St. Dominic’s Building at the College St campus in Waterford. This noticeboard will showcase activities reflecting the recommendations from the Next Steps for Teaching and Learning: Moving Forward Together outputs. It will celebrate collaborative initiatives, including: Activities fostering shared learning and a sense of community and belonging. News and updates reflecting our principles and values at both University and school levels; Publications like the School Teaching and Learning Strategy, with updates on subsequent actions resulting from wide dissemination; Communication of student and staff support services, learning community activities, and continued professional development for all staff; Enablement of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) through various means of engagement and representation; Establishment and resourcing of a dedicated function for research in Teaching & Learning to support an evidence-based approach to practice, impact, decisionmaking, policy, and strategy. This could involve a direct link (via QR code or similar) to a submission page for adding content to the noticeboard. The implementation of this initiative, referred to as ‘Pixels of Progress – Smart Solutions for Communicating the School of Education Community of Practice’ will be led by the Teaching, Learning, and Assessment Committee
