Coding theory is a major component of Applied Algebra. It has many applications in the mathematics of communications and has many links with other scientific disciplines, such as electrical engineering and computer science. Coding theory arises in almost every imaginable digital communications and storage system. In UCD, it is taught at the undergraduate level in the module MATH30180 An Introduction to Coding Theory.
Initiative
Piloting a tool for systematically developing statistics skills
About this initiative
A deliberate practice approach could address the overwhelming nature of learning statistics skills as it focuses only on one specific aspect of the performance at any one time. This enables learners to master specific areas and so increase their self-efficacy (If they could master one particular skill, they could master the other ones too, one at a time). This project will create an accessible, open-access web-app through which learners (initially of two modules, see below) can systematically build statistics skills. The app will contain exercises targeting specific skills, on which learners will receive immediate, automated feedback, and through which they can track their progress.
