Coding theory is a major component of Applied Algebra. It has many applications in the mathematics of communications and has many links with other scientific disciplines, such as electrical engineering and computer science. Coding theory arises in almost every imaginable digital communications and storage system. In UCD, it is taught at the undergraduate level in the module MATH30180 An Introduction to Coding Theory.
Piloting a tool for systematically developing skill in instruction-giving for TESOL teachers
About this initiative
This project will create an accessible, open-access web-app through which TESOL teachers can systematically build instruction-giving skills. The app will contain exemplars which learners can review and receive immediate, automated feedback, and through which they can track their progress. The project is aligned with two SATLE themes. Firstly, the project will promote two UDL principles: ‘provide options for sustaining effort and persistence’, and ‘provide options for self-regulation’. Specifically, it will comply with the UDL guidelines associated with these principles, namely to ‘heighten the salience of goals and objectives …’, ‘increase mastery-oriented feedback …’ and ‘assist individuals in … monitoring progress’ (Ahead, n.d.). Currently, it is difficult to achieve these UDL goals. This is because the non-traditional block mode through which the TESOL module is delivered at SETU inhibits opportunities for goal-setting, deliberate and repeated practice, regular feedback, and the steady monitoring of progress. The web-app will facilitate the integration of each of these features into the teaching of instruction-giving for TESOL.
