Student success at college is not just achieving high grades The National Forum for Teaching and Learning defines student success as the process by which students fulfil their potential and flourish at college and in society. This is a broader activity than simply achieving high grades. Psychosocial competencies are core to the definition of student success: these are the ‘soft skills’ or ‘non-cognitive skills’ that enable students to cope well with learning challenges, engage deeply in learning, and develop their identities as learners and as active citizens. Transitions are a key issue within this priority area, with transitions such as the move from school to college presenting both challenges and opportunities for students.

About this initiative
Digital badges offer the opportunity to provide a visual representation, allowing the learner (earner) to demonstrate their proficiency and skill, in a very public manner (if required) that would otherwise not be possible. This Learning Enhancement Initiative (LEI) sets out to develop a suite of digital badges that will form an integral part of a “Partnership in Academic and Industry Relations (PAIR)” pack. The badges will be designed and awarded to industrially based participants who are engaging with the institute to mentor and advise learners and academics. The primary focus areas for badge development will be student mentor, programme examiner, programme developer and project mentor. The Initiative will involve working with staff and students as well as industrial mentors to develop the training pack. The digital badge system in AIT is approved by Academic Standards and Quality (ASQ) which means that any badges developed or issued will have the AIT stamp of quality.
