Coding theory is a major component of Applied Algebra. It has many applications in the mathematics of communications and has many links with other scientific disciplines, such as electrical engineering and computer science. Coding theory arises in almost every imaginable digital communications and storage system. In UCD, it is taught at the undergraduate level in the module MATH30180 An Introduction to Coding Theory.
About this initiative
The Higher Education Learner Programme (HELP) is one of the initiatives funded by SATLE and has supported the development of an online programme to assist students transitioning to higher education. This has been a co-created programme, designed and created by students for incoming students. The online programme covers eight topic areas, including Digital Skills, Academic Writing, Social Skills, etc. and is available through a range of platforms for students. Though there are a number of induction programmes across the sector, this is unique in that it was co-created by staff and students with many of the outputs (e.g. videos/recordings/live discussions sessions) being designed and facilitated by the students themselves, thereby illustrating the student-centred focus of the initiative.
