Coding theory is a major component of Applied Algebra. It has many applications in the mathematics of communications and has many links with other scientific disciplines, such as electrical engineering and computer science. Coding theory arises in almost every imaginable digital communications and storage system. In UCD, it is taught at the undergraduate level in the module MATH30180 An Introduction to Coding Theory.
From Zero to Vevox Hero: Embedding a Classroom Response System for Enhanced Learner Experience, Engagement and DT
About this initiative
This project aims to integrate Vevox, a real-time polling and engagement tool, into everyday teaching practices at SETU. Research demonstrates that Classroom Response Systems (CRS) significantly enhance student engagement, participation, and learning outcomes. Caldwell (2007) highlights that CRS tools improve interaction and provide immediate feedback, fostering a more active and engaging learning environment. CRS are instrumental in fostering inclusive participation by providing anonymity, which encourages all students to engage without fear of judgment. For instance, a study (Freeman et al., 2006) found that students’ propensity to engage with in-class questions increases with the degree of anonymity provided. There are various CRS tools available, such as Mentimeter, Wooclap, and Vevox, each with comparable features. At SETU, we have an institutional license for Vevox, which makes it the most practical and resource-efficient choice for this initiative. By leveraging Vevox, we aim to foster active learning, inclusivity, and digital transformation across campuses, creating consistent support and sustainable practices for educators and learners alike. Project Objectives: 1. Recruit lecturers who currently do not use Vevox and support them in adopting it. 2. Develop an engaging and accessible digital learning resource using Articulate Rise to provide on-demand, point-of-need training. 3. Deliver engaging, hands-on workshops branded as “From Zero to Vevox Hero” to accelerate adoption. 4. Collect data on lecturer and student experiences before and after Vevox implementation to measure impact and inform best practices. 5. Disseminate findings through a final report and conference presentations. Using the latest digital technologies, this cross-campus project will design, develop, and pilot on-demand digital learning content and face to face workshops to educate SETU lecturers. This project supports the call’s theme of digital transformation and supporting the development of digital and open teaching and learning, including online, blended and face to face modes of learning.
