Coding theory is a major component of Applied Algebra. It has many applications in the mathematics of communications and has many links with other scientific disciplines, such as electrical engineering and computer science. Coding theory arises in almost every imaginable digital communications and storage system. In UCD, it is taught at the undergraduate level in the module MATH30180 An Introduction to Coding Theory.
About this initiative
A set of teaching and learning materials and tools focused on Design Thinking (DT) specifically for engineering students was developed. The team has previously identified the need for resources to cater to this specific user group through their ongoing work delivering DT workshops in academic and industry settings. The processes and mindsets associated with engineering can differ significantly in their outlooks and practices from those of DT (linear v iterative, system-centred v human-centred). This can present a challenge to engineering students new to DT.
