The Creative Cognition Framework (CCF)

SATLE

About this initiative

IADT’s DELTA award-winning document articulated the interdisciplinary and critical conditions needed for effective and meaningful Art & Design education. Since then, a member of the team has developed the Creative Cognition Framework (CCF), a tool that aims to help educators critically consider and build learning experiences in Art & Design. For Art and Design educators, Kimbell et al’s 1988 model of “Mind/Hand Interaction” underpins pedagogy and serves well to capture the necessarily non-linear, embodied processes that are essential elements of Art & Design learning. However, Kimbell’s model does not translate well into a template for designing learning experiences. The CCF tool takes the temporal and non-linear elements of Kimbell’s model and develops these into a physical template that supports pedagogical design. CCF is a three-dimensional tripartite model that makes explicit the conditions required to design meaningful learning opportunities for Art & Design students. In June 2019, the tool was successfully tested in a targeted workshop with 15 Art & Design lecturers who were designing a common core programme of learning for 1st year undergraduates. Having completed an initial proof-of-concept there is now an opportunity, under this T&L initiative, to rigorously test the CCF in a series of pilot workshops in the context of programmatic review within IADT’s Faculty of Film, Art & Creative Technologies. Following these internal workshops it is proposed that the CCF will be further tested in two external third-level Art & Design institutions. The results of these projects will inform curriculum development in IADT and form the basis for further research.
