Visit to Epic Museum: Migration and National Identity

‘Visit to the Epic Museum: Migration and National Identity’ was a SATLE-funded project that allowed a group of students of Italian postcolonial literature at UCC to make a trip to Dublin to visit the Museum of Irish Emigration. New Italians: Race, Identity and Memory in Contemporary Literature is a research-led module that I devised and that investigates a series of texts about Italian contemporary multicultural society. Beyond the actual philological analysis, the ultimate goal of the module is to make students reflect on what it means to live in a globalised world and interrogate how to be more engaged with our contemporary society throughout their daily lives and to take responsibility in making our society more inclusive. Italy, very much like Ireland, has a long history of emigration and a more recent one of immigration. Both migratory movements shaped, and keep shaping, what it means to be ‘Italian’. A visit to the Epic Museum in Dublin which helps visitors reflect about Irishness and how this can change in the light of global practices of mobility was the perfect springboard for the students to bridge the gap between the literary texts and their own experiences.
