Creating an inclusive, co-designed counter-narrative centred on the authentic voices and lived experiences of those within the DP and refugee system, this work foregrounds the individual subjectivities of the people at the centre of the dichotomising “Fortress Europe” narrative – balancing mainstream media’s narratives of “villain” or “victim” or “hero” when representing the Asylum Seeker. This minimising effect, without nuance or depth, presents a picture of the stripped-bare human who has lost their political voice in transit. The Soundseekers Audio Festival attempts to counterbalance these marginalising myths by creating a safe space to amplify these under-represented voices, contributing toward “changing the narrative” through traditional and new media art forms and multi-mediated platforms, embedding 21st-century digital skills.
