Each year a community-engaged learning (CEL) project is undertaken as part of PD6113 Information and Engagement Skills, a core module on the Masters in Planning and Sustainable Development (MPlan) programme. This SATLE project involved collation of the findings of the 2023 project, which was in collaboration with Cork City Council and the Blackpool Community. The funding also supported the dissemination the learnings from this project, along with a series of prior CEL projects, at a European conference. The delivery of a professional accredited planning Master programme is time consuming and one objective of this funding was to assist with disseminating the rich learnings from using CEL in the classroom in teaching planning. Two MPlan students, Aidan McEvoy and Tim Slattery, worked on the project over the summer months to help collate the project findings. A presentation and paper entitled ‘Overcoming challenges in delivering Community Engaged Learning for planning students in third-level education’ outlining our learning and experience of the CEL process, was presented by Jeanette Fitzsimons at the Association of European Planning Schools (AESOP) Annual Congress at the University of Lodz, Poland in July 2023.
