Develop and deliver an interactive workshop in Sustainable Development for Final-Year Science Students

Ensuring sustainability in STEM education is essential for tackling global issues like climate change, pollution, and resource depletion. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) offer a valuable framework for embedding sustainability into scientific education. The integration of sustainability into laboratory learning and research practices is essential to drive change. A student-led approach to sustainability ensures that undergraduates actively integrate green and sustainable scientific principles and responsible research practices into their work. This proposal seeks funding for a cross-campus team to create and deliver an interactive, cross campus workshop that acknowledges and assesses students’ comprehension and application of SDG principles in science for final-year science students in both the Waterford and Carlow campuses. This interactive workshop will be held towards the end of semester 1, thus allowing the students to integrate these principles into their final year research project. The project aligns with The Second National Strategy on Education for Sustainable Development to 2030 by fostering active citizenship, critical thinking, transformative learning in sustainability and empowering and mobilising young people. It is also rooted in the pillars of the UNESCO ESD Framework to 2030, emphasising policy support, whole-institution approaches, educators’ capacity-building and youth engagement. Furthermore, the interactive workshop supports Ireland’s digital transformation strategy by leveraging innovative, technology-enhanced learning to provide an inclusive, personalised, and scalable approach to sustainability education. The self-directed nature of the workshop resources ensures students develop digital literacy, independent learning skills, and a deeper understanding of sustainability challenges and solutions relevant to their future professional and academic pursuits. It is envisaged that the development of the workshop content, case studies and resources for this project will be the first step in the development of a micro-credential digital badge in Sustainability in Science. The development of the badge will enhance students’ employability while fostering sustainable scientific practices.
