Mapping Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in Irish Higher Education

As GenAI continues to emerge in teaching and learning in higher education, it is important to capture the evolving practices, research, and policies across Irish higher education institutions. This form gathers information on current initiatives to provide a national overview of how staff and institutions are engaging with these technologies.

We invite contributions on projects, innovations, research, and policies related to GenAI in teaching and learning. By contributing to this dataset, you will help build a clearer picture of the opportunities and challenges associated with GenAI in higher education, inform policy discussions, and foster collaboration between institutions.

Initiative Details
TitleUL Generative Artificial Intelligence Principles for the University, Staff, Researchers and Students
Description

The five principles of Generative Artificial Intelligence have been developed at the University of Limerick to reflect the roles and responsibilities of UL, as an institution, staff (regardless of their role), researchers and students. These principles facilitate the implementation of Generative AI across UL while also remaining committed to UL’s existing strategies and aims.

UL’s Generative Artificial Intelligence Principles for the University, Staff, Researchers and Students have been developed with reference to relevant University academic and research integrity policies, and national and international standards and guidelines relating to artificial intelligence.

The five principles are:

  1. Generative AI Literacy
  2. Integrity
  3. Innovation
  4. Equity
  5. Ethical and Secure Use

These are intended to be dynamic guiding principles which strive to provide a roadmap to all stakeholders within UL to navigate both current and emerging challenges and opportunities associated with Generative AI. The principles have been mapped to the UL Graduate Attributes (Agile, Articulate, Curious, Courageous, Responsible) to align with existing UL frameworks.

More details related to each principle and how they apply to the Institution, Staff, Researchers and Students are available here.
